Chris Lines Consulting Ltd primarily provides services based on the knowledge and experience of Chris. Other professionals can also be employed through the company if required

  • Areas of Expertise
    • Chris has had many years experience at high level in road safety and is used to dealing with national and local governments. Major strengths are development of road safety strategies and programmes. He has the benefit of a sound research background and has put this into practice very successfully in London – a proven track record
    • Chris has a lot of experience of European road safety and working with European Partners. This work continues through a current European project (SOL) and working with the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP)
    • His background research knowledge in transportation and practical experience in road safety makes Chris a valuable member of any project team and he is often included as a senior advisor, working with large engineering consultancies, both in the UK and abroad
    • Chris also has experience of managing staff and dealing with culture change in an organisation. This experience is based on taking TRL from a government body into the private sector, and his learning while doing a Masters of Business Administration (MBA)
    • Chris has a good overall perspective of transportation profession, including the management of traffic, goods and people in cities
    • Chris is a very experienced presenter and as an independent can often be useful when working with potential clients. He is also an experienced chairman and good facilitator

  •  Chris Lines Career Summary (full CV available)
    • Chris Joined the UK Transport Research Laboratory in 1970 where he worked on several research projects including road pricing and communication with drivers
    • In 1980 Chris moved into the urban networks Division where he developed traffic control software including TRANSYT and MOVA. He also worked on the programme to incorporate safety into the traffic models
    • Chris then became involved with the Urban Safety Management programme, working on the UK ‘Safer City’ project in Gloucester. He also led an EU project – DUMAS – with 10 partners in 9 countries
    • In 1992 Chris became Head of Traffic, managing 170 staff.
    • In 1994 Chris worked with the Directors in the successful management buy-out of the TRL; forming the private company TRL Ltd in 1997
    • Chris then had various senior positions in TRL Ltd, including head of business development
    • In 2003 Chris joined Transport for London (TfL) as Head of the London Road Safety Unit, responsible to the Mayor for the delivery of the London Road Safety Plan. He was responsible for over 45 staff and budget of £60M. By 2009 London had achieved a 52% reduction in all Killed and Seriously Injured (KSI), including a 71% decrease in child KSI. London is widely seen as one of the leaders for road safety in the UK and in Europe
    • Chris was made a visiting professor at UCL in 2003
    • Chris left TfL in 2010 and has been working as an independent transport consultant on a wide variety of projects. He is retained by the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) as a Senior Advisor

    • Chris is based in Crowthorne, Berkshire, with good links to London, airports, etc
    • Charges are usually on a daily basis, with the number of days to provide a specific output agreed with the client in advance. Our aim is to give the client value for money and a quality deliverable
    • Chris will not take on commissions if he feels he cannot provide value for money
